Evaluation of DNA ploidy and degree of DNA abnormality in benign and malignant melanocytic lesions of the skin using video imaging.

2000

BACKGROUND Making a morphologic distinction between benign and malignant melanocytic tumors of the skin is frequently difficult, especially because “gray zones” between these lesions often exist. DNA image cytometry as an adjuvant method for the diagnosis and prognostic prediction of premalignant lesions and malignant tumors of many other organs is already well established. The aim of this study was to determine whether DNA image cytometry is helpful in distinguishing benign from malignant melanocytic lesions and whether cytometry would give valid information with which to predict the prognoses associated with malignant melanomas. METHODS DNA image cytometry was performed on 127 benign and …

Electrical impedance spectroscopy as a potential adjunct diagnostic tool for cutaneous melanoma.

2012

Background Previous studies have shown statistically significant differences in electrical impedance between various cutaneous lesions. Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) may therefore be able to aid clinicians in differentiating between benign and malignant skin lesions. Objectives The aim of the study was to develop a classification algorithm to distinguish between melanoma and benign lesions of the skin with a sensitivity of at least 98% and a specificity approximately 20 per cent higher than the diagnostic accuracy of dermatologists. Patients/Methods A total of 1300 lesions were collected in a multicentre, prospective, non-randomized clinical trial from 19 centres around Europe.

Expression of the Tumor Suppressor Gene Product p16INK4 in Benign and Malignant Melanocytic Lesions

1998

The gene MTS1 encodes p16INK4, an inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinase 4, and is frequently deleted, mutated, or silenced by promoter methylation in melanoma cells and in the germline of familial melanoma patients. Although MTS1 may thus be the candidate melanoma suppressor gene that maps to chromosome 9p21, it is not clear how dysfunction at that locus temporally relates to melanoma progression. To further test its role in sporadic melanoma, the expression of p16INK4-protein and -mRNA was characterized in melanomas and melanocytic nevi by immunocytochemistry and in situ reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Histologic tissue sections were immunolabeled with anti-p16INK4 antibody…

Automatic differentiation of melanoma from dysplastic nevi.

2015

International audience; Malignant melanoma causes the majority of deaths related to skin cancer. Nevertheless, it is the most treatable one, depending on its early diagnosis. The early prognosis is a challenging task for both clinicians and dermatologist, due to the characteristic similarities of melanoma with other skin lesions such as dysplastic nevi. In the past decades, several computerized lesion analysis algorithms have been proposed by the research community for detection of melanoma. These algorithms mostly focus on differentiating melanoma from benign lesions and few have considered the case of melanoma against dysplastic nevi. In this paper, we consider the most challenging task a…
